And because space is at a premium in pint-size bedrooms, we found some pieces that do double-duty by serving more than one purpose.

Partially from personal experience (trying and failing to make a big bed work in a small bedroom), we’ve learned a few things about refreshing a tired small space.

Plants, for instance, serve both the practical purpose of cleaning the air but also add some aesthetically pleasing green and if they have flowers, even more colour.

Here are some ideas for working with small-sized bedrooms.

Starting from the top; For headboards, if you want the simple, minimalist look, you may want to nix it. But if you go for one, it can not only add a visual element to your room but the right one will be a useful addition, too.

Our pick: Beberg, queen headboard ($599) — This headboard-bookcase combo offers storage for almost anything you need by the bed. It has hidden storage behind sliding doors and two adjustable shelves for an alarm clock or cup of tea. It also has cord access through an enclosed rear panel so you don’t have to see all that stuff. Available in Pacific maple or walnut.

Now I lay me down to bed; These beds are tailored to the smaller bedroom.

Our picks: The Luli platform bed boasts what a lot of designers will tell you works in small spaces — legs that don’t go down to the floor and simple lines. That goes for those buying sofas for small spaces, too.

It doesn’t require a box spring, but you can use one if you like, and it suits anyone pursuing that minimalist look.

We tried the Sanaya 10-inch bed frame. It was easy to assemble. Its style is sleek and simple and, bonus, there’s room underneath for storage. More on that in a moment.

We also love the Sha Cerlin Tufted Low Profile Platform Bed ($1,039.99) — When you want a minimalist look with the spotlight on the bed. Not for everyone but pretty sweet.

Pillows; We wanted monogrammed pillows but found they were quite expensive. These ones are a great option. Made for tweens (folks between the ages of nine and 12) but, wait, they are perfectly adult appropriate with gentle, pastel shades, pretty patterns and a letter of your choice.

Our pick: Tween Pillow Monogram Striped Lumbar Pillow ($39.99)

Mirror mirror on the floor; We prefer to put art on our walls. Besides, these floor-version mirrors serve a dual purpose.

Our picks: Askins over-the-door jewelry armoire with mirror ($226.99) — It’s full-length and perfect for dorms, apartments or small bedrooms. It has a LED-illuminated jewellery cabinet to show off your bling with two drawers, five shelves, 32 necklace and bracelet hooks, 48 earring holes and 90 earring slots. It’s also designed to be tip-over resistant. Available in white and rustic brown.

Full-length mirror with LED lights ($319.99) — Night light and mirror. This modern-looking piece has a matte-finished aluminum frame with smooth round corners. The lighting has three colour modes and a dimmable brightness function.

Some colour; Adding stain glass features to windows can add colour, an interesting decorative touch and privacy in a less bulky way than drapes do.

Our pick: We tried the Stained glass leaves window film ($65.99) — We love how easy it is to apply and that it’s removable/reusable. Love it in this house and take it to the next one.

Low on storage fix; To add some space to your small room, we suggest getting some under-bed storage. It can be for extra bedding, winter wear or if you are super organized and do the seasonal swap, you can put clothing for the season not in use away while you enjoy the one that is happening now.

Our picks;  Latch Wheeled Plastic Underbed Storage | set of four ($169.01) — This is our first choice because you wheely want storage that rolls making it easier to access.

Under-the-Bed Storage Bag ($31.89) — This is the less expensive option but we love the clear lid, label window and zipper closure.

Shelving; Goes without saying, shelves are a great way to store stuff or display things like plants or books.

Our picks: Utility Wall Mounted Coat Rack ($48.99) — Add plants, hang purses or bathrobes or scarves.

Wysocki Wall Mounted Coat Rack ($139) — This one costs more but it offers much more with cubbies where you can put small baskets or items, hook features for backpacks or bathrobes. And, it looks lovely.

Nightstand, kinda; If you get a low enough dresser, it can serve as a nightstand. Or if you get a nightstand with storage, it can double as a dresser. You get it.

Our picks: Davares 3 Drawer 31.5” W Dresser ($499.99) — We really like this piece which can work in the bedroom or be repurposed elsewhere in the house if you change things up.

Raymundo 2 – Drawer Nightstand ($109.99) — Customers say this is well-made and we like it because it looks good, does the job and is less expensive.
